Kite Surfing

It’s summer; the days are long and the sun demotivating. Some gyms are closed and it is not possible to practice your sport and for others the sun does not give the desire to train in such conditions. Fortunately, there are sports that can be practiced in summer, it’s about the more or less known board sports and are all highly complementary and beneficial to athletes (beginners and advanced).

Too many people today lack vitamin D (which is acquired with the sun), too many people complain for not having a tan, for being too fat, for not seeing the sun, to always be locked; well ! This is a sport for you; it is practiced in the sun, the outdoor, in full nature: Breathe, Sunbathe, Lose weight and Enjoy!

We will introduce to you three of these board sports as well as the benefits they can bring to you.

Kitesurfing

Is it the desire of surfers to fly over the water or the snowboarders’ lack of their winter sport? Anyway, the Kitesurf managed to make an appearance and even better than that because it made a breakthrough as a real sport trend.

Registered at the Fédération Française de Vol libre (French Federation of Free Flight), this sport is an aerial sport practiced on water. With wings and a board we find in this sport the thrills of surfing, snowboarding but also kite and water skiing. Very complete the kitesurf allows you to sail on water and in the air while watching the horizon without being hindered by the sails.

To control, the « Kite » (commonly called) is equipped with a bar which also enable the traction. Regarding the practice, licensed premises is required as this activity requires a lot of space and can hardly accommodate with other family activities of the tourists on the beaches. So look for the ideal beaches before you start.

As in many sports where we find several disciplines, Kitesurfing is no exception to the rule and we can then explore different ways to practice the Kitesurf. We will discover some of them below but there are still many and maybe if Kitesurf happens to take place in the Olympic Games, the disciplines could multiply who knows?

The first that we will mention is the freestyle which consists of making figures more or less original and vertiginous while maintaining wings of the Kitesurf above. Contrary to the Wakestyle where the figures are carried out with the sail in a down position. There are also other kinds of competitions that allows to compete on speed (by being the fastest on a specific distance: 500 m) or waves (with nice curves).

There are also kinds of regattas (Race), the long distances races, or even hikes (freeride) more classic for the passionate who want to discover the landscape and obtain the feelings of well-being and the pleasure in this activity in a heavenly environment.

Beginners, do note that although the practice of Kitesurf is possible without lessons, it is highly recommended for security reasons but also for handling the material to turn to a school to learn the basics. Be aware that this activity can be dangerous when it is badly performed (as in many sports for that matter!). So, be cautious and take classes in order not to do just anything!

 The benefits of Kitesurf

And how nice it is to remember what this sport can do for you, here a tiny idea of the benefits of Kitesurf.

The conviviality of the community of people practicing the Kitesurf makes you feel supported and it is always nice to have the group spirit near when practicing alone (individual sport). We find a lot of this group phenomenon in the « Kite ».

Regarding the physical benefits, Kitesurfing is a very complete sport; it develops the upper muscles of the body as well as the lower muscles. And as you have to put in motion all these muscles at the same time, you develop good coordinations. And you will certainly surprise your friends by scratching your hair while rubbing your tummy at the same time; with that said, it is certainly more amazing to show your pretty Kitesurf figures.

Sea Kayaking

A great activity for a stroll on the sea, do some sports and sunbathing at the same time: the sea kayaking. Rather technical, the sea kayak allows beautiful hikes and strolls on the water. There are kayaks with one, two or three places, that’s something to do as a family, in couple or sail alone.

In wood or plastic, the sea kayak has a pointed shape in front and at the back. We use paddles with two blades (the tips of the paddles) in order to direct and balance more. The sea Kayak can be 5 meters long (for a single kayak); it can also have a sail for long distances and can store food and something to bivouac on in the watertight compartments (sometimes you overturn).

As small boats they can (again here with special regulations and declarations) sail far and for long, it will be necessary then to bring special equipments such as life jackets, a lifeline, distress flares and several security equipments that are essential for a sea trip. There are two main forms of sea kayak: the sit-on-top and the eskimo. The names are very representatives. The first is a craft where you sit on the kayak in a dedicated space, it is more stable, more playful and unsinkable (it cannot sink), it is favoured for family use, for children, for beginners and experienced who wish to keep their freedom of movement and have fun in the waves. The second (the eskimo) is a kayak where you sit inside, thus staying dry; the length of the craft is bigger than a sit-on-top which enables you to pick up speed.

And the benefits?

Like all hiking sports, it is an endurance sport more or less quiet according to the pace you take. Muscles-wise you will strengthen your back-end but also the entire scapular girdle (shoulder and shoulder blades); you will have muscle in the belly area with the pectoral and abdominals working. And of course the arms being urged you will strengthen your biceps and forearms.

If you have knee problems and that the race is not recommended for you: this sport is ideal for hiking without traumatizing your knees! Even though the leg muscle is working, the knees take less impact and can rest more. A good solution to let them rest while doing sport.

And then the mental side, a good hike at sea, a cruise trip alone or with others, it is a source of relaxation and impressive recreation.

Sport catamaran

Ever dreamed of sailing, to navigate at all speeds on the sea? Try the sport catamaran. Often use for learning to sail, with the sail handling easier by the stability of the catamaran, it is also a racing craft.

This boat has two parallel hulls, a mainsail and a small sail (also called the jib), the catamaran is manoeuvred by one, two or three people. Very stable thanks to the hulls that provide some stability on water; it is also much easier to stand on board of a catamaran than on a board when you are a beginner.

With its ability to reach very high speeds (the sport catamaran is one of the fastest boat), you will find the thrill of sliding, of speed while radiating in the sun and on the water.

The benefits?

As with all the sports in the marine environment, the air is pure and saturated with iodine which treats headaches and weaknesses such as fatigue or stress. The freedom, the stroll and the relaxation that this sport provides contribute greatly.

On the physical side, we not only develops arm muscles by handling the sail or bar but as well the balance by being on the boat at high speed. And then a little sense of orientation that works progressively and here you are ready to navigate.

Take into consideration the contraindications of these sports, it is essential to know how to swim but also not to have health problems that cause loss of consciousness, the ideal is to have a check-up with your doctor and to monitor the evolution of your organism and limit injuries.
